Step by step guide
The first step is to analyze your budget. Axie Origins list out all of the rewards for every placement on the leaderboard in each Era in a Season. You should decide on a goal to aim for in each Era. Whether you're looking to double in ROI, break even, or only take a small loss. Your goal should also be realistic. Assess how much time you are able to put in and how much you're willing to spend in order to achieve that. There are so many opportunities to win rewards with free events like SLP weekend and race events. If you aim to break even with the cost of your team, remember you will still have those axies to sell or keep as your own. As you can see from the Season 6 Final Era payouts. Top 66 to 100, paid out 30 AXS. Which currently is about $200. With $200 you can build a very good comp.
Each team comp has core cards. Cards that are absolutely irreplaceable cards, without which the comp falls apart. So you should study the meta by keeping an eye on the leaderboards, and watching replays. There are so many tools such as Axies.io and YouTube where you can watch gameplay of a certain comp to see what works and what doesn't. Let's take a Feather comp as an example. Search for the Rune that every feather comp uses, Feather Descend, in Axies.io. You can see that there are two core cards: Feather Spear and Tri Feather. For a Bubbles comp, we can check the Heart of Ocean rune. The cards that pop up into every single winning comp are Sponge and Nimo. For Bleed, let's search Brutal Claw. Chubby. Arco and Gerbil are prevalent.
Let’s head over to the marketplace and shop for a budget Feather AOE comp. Spam starts off with building his Midliner carry. He filters the marketplace for Tri Feather and Wing Horn. Those are the most undebatable cards. He also filters to bird axies in order to use Feather Descend. Next is to think about which tails would work well - Cloud and Granma’s Fan are great options. Looking for axies with 13+ Bird Potential Points (PP) is important so that you can use Degrade charms to build up your Feathers as quickly as possible.
Next, is the backliner. Ideally, we’re looking for a Mech with Wing Horn and Tri Feather. While shopping for a mech you want at least 8 Bird PP to use a Feather Fan charm in order to buff your midliner with an extra feather. Cloud is the best tail option again, but a cheaper option is Cottontail or Granma's Fan. If a mech is out of your budget, you could also go the Bug route with a Collect and Protect rune.
Last but not least let’s check out the frontliner options. Sacred Feather is the best rune but may not be affordable if everyone is buying out the Bird axies. An affordable option is Last Wish. Last Wish lets you use any body you like. Or you could use another Collect and Protect on a Bug. Since we already have two Wing Horns we do not need a third. Wing Horns are not used until late in the match so three of them are not needed. But once again we’ll filter for Tri Feather. Cloud and Granma's Fan are good tails once again. And then you can search for things such as Lucas, Early Bird and Pink Cheek for card draw options.
